The curriculum at Hatcham Temple Grove aims to provide our pupils with a broad, balanced education, develop them to fulfil their potential and nurture them into good citizens, conscious of their responsibilities to each other, their family and society. British Values underpin our entire ethos and curriculum.
Staff at all levels (Senior, Middle, SENDCo, Subject Leaders and Class Teachers) have all been instrumental in the development of whole curriculum in core subjects as well as the wider curriculum. Our curriculum has been designed to support all pupils from our disadvantaged, SEND, children of different faiths, no faith and ethnicity to reflect an inclusive school. We follow the national curriculum and adapt this to make it relevant to meet the needs of the pupils at our school and community.
All teachers are expected to ensure that the curriculum is ambitious and demanding for ALL pupils. It goes beyond the national curriculum with no limits for any pupils
All staff have high expectations for pupils in all subjects and we believe all children can access the learning which it is pitched to the correct level. We are aware of pupil’s starting points through ongoing formative and summative assessment.
We have very high expectations for attainment and progress in all subject but we also offer a wide range of art, musical and sporting opportunities throughout each phase of the primary. Children are given opportunities to participate in after school clubs which are linked to the curriculum areas and are often invited to participate in competitive events.
Early Years Foundation Stage
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) is the stage of education for children from birth to the end of Reception year.
It is based on recognition that children learn best through play and active learning. In Early Years, we teach the children from the EYFS Curriculum. This is split into seven areas of learning; three prime areas and four specific areas.
- Personal, Social and Emotional Development (PSED).
- Physical Development (PD).
- Communication and Language (CL).
- Literacy (Phonics, Reading and Writing).
- Understanding the world.
- Expressive arts and design.
The provision of the curriculum ensures that children experience a full range of learning opportunities including child initiated, teacher directed and group learning. Within the curriculum, activities and learning experiences are planned to include the areas of learning in the EYFS. The curriculum is underpinned by a play-based approach where children have access to all areas of learning within the classrooms and the outside learning area. Children will at times be directly taught a new skill and at other times discover for themselves through carefully planned play opportunities. Phonics, reading and writing are taught through whole class teaching, guided reading and guided writing sessions supported by a structured reading scheme.
During the first term every child in reception is assessed. This is known as a baseline assessment. Children are assessed throughout their time in Early Years through observations, conversations and photographs by teachers and other Early Years staff members who work within the setting. Parents, staff and the children all contribute to the assessment process. Next steps are set to move the children towards achieving the ‘Early Learning Goals’.
Key Stage 1 (Years 1 & 2)
The children in KS1 follow the National Curriculum subjects as well as Personal, Social, Health Education (including Relationship Education) with Citizenship.
The transition from Reception to Year 1 is dealt with sensitivity, especially in the first term where Year 1 children learn through play and have daily access to outside activities which continues to use the principles of the EYFS to develop the child’s learning and social development.
Year 1 teachers use the FSP (Foundation Stage Profile) to build an accurate picture of children’s learning and progress and then move on to the Federation assessment levels, linked to the end of year national learning objectives. All learning and teaching in KS1 is based on termly themes which links to statutory programmes of study e.g. events beyond living memory such as The Great Fire of London. This allows children to explore subject knowledge across a range of areas, such as art, geography science and history.
English and Mathematics are taught daily and children also receive daily reading sessions and phonics in year 1 and 2.
Reading, writing, speaking and listening continues to be taught through the use of synthetic phonics (the Letters and Sounds scheme) and supported by a structured reading scheme (Oxford Reading Tree and Rigby Star). Children with additional educational needs (AEN) are identified and interventions put in place to help address their needs. Children needing further encouragement and support also may work in small groups with our team of learning support assistants (LSAs).
At the end of KS1 the children are assessed to report their National Curriculum attainment levels in Reading, Grammar, Punctuation and Spelling, Writing, Mathematics and Science.
German is taught by fluent speakers at least once a week, with opportunities built into the curriculum so it is as immersive as possible.
Specialist music teachers deliver music lessons to all classes on a weekly basis, with a focus on developing musical roots and basic key skills in Key Stage 1, which will support the learning of instruments throughout Key Stage 2.
Key Stage 2 (Years 3 - 6)
Our Key Stage 2 curriculum is both flexible and broad. We provide practical experiences for our pupils and make links with previous learning to enable every child to be the best learner that they can possibly be.
The children continue to follow the National Curriculum subjects as well as Personal, Social, Health Education (including Relationship Education) with citizenship otherwise known as PSHCE.
All learning and teaching in KS2 is based on termly themes taken which links to the National Curriculum statutory framework e.g. Britain's settlement by Anglo Saxons and a local history study based around the Lewisham/ London area. This allows children to explore subject knowledge across a range of areas, such as Art, Geography, Science and History.
English and Mathematics are taught daily and children also receive daily reading sessions. Pupils continue to practice their handwriting and work towards earning their 'Pen License'. Grammar, Punctuation and Spelling (GPS) lessons are taught within English lessons. All children receive weekly spellings and are tested at the end week. All our pupils have a login for MyMaths and are encouraged to use this both in school and at home. As well as daily Math lessons, pupils take part in daily Arithmetic sessions, Friday Times Table lessons and consolidate their number, reasoning and problem solving knowledge.
At the end of KS2 the children are assessed to report their National Curriculum attainment levels in Reading, Grammar, Punctuation and Spelling, Writing, Mathematics and Science.
We have specialist Music teachers who deliver Music lessons to all classes on a weekly basis, including Strings, Clarinet and Recorder throughout Key Stage 2. Individual lessons are also offered by peripatetic teachers.
Our children have weekly PE lessons of which many are taught by specialist teachers. Our KS2 pupils continue to have German taught to them by fluent speakers at least once a week, with other opportunities built into the curriculum so that it continues to be as immersive as possible.
